Project Summary
The Film Labyrinth project addresses the issue of unequal opportunities for participation in artistic and cultural activities among older adults (54+) across Croatia. Over the past two years, the dynamics of social and cultural life have shifted significantly, with a rapid transition of cultural content to the virtual world, leading to a surge in online artistic content (performances, exhibitions, books, discussions, workshops). These contents were often not tailored or segmented and lacked interactivity due to the ad hoc approach. Therefore, cultural content needs to be adapted to the needs of older adults, considering their capabilities, interests, and needs.
The first solution the project tackles is the adaptation of online interactive artistic programs in media literacy for older adults. Although the 54+ group is diverse, their media literacy content needs are similar.
Through years of experience, we have identified a significant need for media literacy to be taught in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, resulting in numerous activities and film creations. Group dynamics and interaction between participants and instructors contribute significantly to this, but we believe well-adapted and developed online programs can create a similar atmosphere and engage participants in learning about media literacy in an indirect and multi-layered way.
Film Labyrinth is inspired by online treasure hunt games. Participants navigate an online labyrinth independently through a series of puzzles, ultimately discovering a mysterious film that is discussed during a participatory workshop. Each labyrinth has a specific theme (film dramaturgy, editing, narration, etc.) and is divided into three cycles/film meetings and Labyrinth Pro workshops that deepen a particular theme.
The second solution the project addresses is computer literacy for people aged 54+, as a significant portion of older adults are not proficient with online tools, especially those specialized for online learning. In practical work with filming equipment, such as cameras, tripods, and sound recorders, as well as computer equipment for image and sound editing, participants have shown great interest and activity, but often with caution, even fear of technology. Despite owning computers at home that they use regularly, participants still feel apprehensive, approaching new tools with tension and discomfort, though with great interest and effort. We will improve the insufficiently developed IT skills of people over 54 through participation in online content.
The Film Labyrinth project will, in addition to teaching about film and media, offer participants guidance through the world of online and digital tools for work, learning, creation, and connection. A personalized approach, support, and workshops designed to become progressively more technically demanding as their experience grows will enable participants to acquire new skills and improve their level of computer literacy, knowledge essential in both professional and personal life today.
Besides artistic excellence and the promotion of high-quality film content, our program stands out by insisting on interactivity, accessibility, and first-class visual design in an attractive combination of art, education, and entertainment. We aim to guide participants to become film and computer experts without them even realizing it.
Project Goals and Expected Outcomes
The goal of this innovative project is to promote equal opportunities and active social online inclusion and participation in cultural-artistic project activities for people aged 54+. Online film cultural and artistic activities socially (re)integrate these groups into society, contributing to the creation of a more favorable and safer environment through online activities.
