CinEd is the largest EU network and VOD platform for film literacy, which since 2015 has been implementing a free programme aimed at teachers, educators, and interested professionals and citizens for teaching children and young people about film and through film. Shadow Casters have been leading the project in Croatia since 2019.
The project leader is Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema from Portugal, and the partners include the organisations Arte Urbana Collectif from Bulgaria, Asociace Ceskych Filmovych Klubu from the Czech Republic, Cinémathèque française from France, Get Societa Cooperativa Sociale A Responsabilita Limitata from Italy, DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum from Germany, Mog Technologies SA from Portugal, Os Filhos de Lumière – Associação Cultural from Portugal, and A Bao A Qu Associació from Spain.
The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) has evaluated the project with the following words:
CinEd is a European film education programme that, through a comprehensive digital approach, facilitates access to European film and encourages film education across Europe. Aimed at children and young people (aged 6 to 18), as well as teachers and educators inside and outside the school system, CinEd seeks to foster a lasting interest in and knowledge of European cinema among young people, their critical thinking and creative sensibility, and to contribute to general education through film, while raising awareness of European cultural diversity.
By bringing film art closer to children and youth, Shadow Casters have been systematically implementing Frooom! film workshops since 2012. We continue our work in this field by joining the CinEd platform – an international educational programme dedicated to familiarising children and young people, as well as their teachers, with the layered and meaningful world of film.
CinEd is a European programme for education about film and through film for children and youth through systematic training of teachers and film educators who work with them. It provides free access to a curated collection of European heritage and contemporary art-house films with Croatian subtitles. CinEd offers free access to a collection of selected heritage and art-house European films for educational purposes. Its main goal is to develop long-term knowledge and taste for European cinema, critical judgment, and the creative sensibility of young people, and to contribute to general education through film and awareness of European cultural diversity.
To achieve this, CinEd in its 2.0 edition focuses on teachers and film educators in both formal and informal education systems, as those who can open the world of auteur and classic film to young people, beyond the commercial works and entertainment they are usually exposed to. CinEd offers film educators and teachers free access to an archetypal collection of films with screening rights and subtitles via the platform cined.eu, free accompanying pedagogical booklets for each film, and free training in the CinEd methodology of teaching about film and through film.
We plan to translate all CinEd films and materials into Croatian, offer free CinEd film screenings in cinemas for children across Croatia, and conduct a series of training sessions for teachers. In addition, six Croatian films have been included in the CinEd collection, which we plan to promote and use for educational purposes. We aim to utilise this large European partnership to promote and include Croatian films in the CinEd collection and further connect the local scene with the European one.
