(Pogon) Cinema in the Courtyard – Screening of the Film “Vitić Dances”

The film ‘Vitić Dances’ will be screened in the courtyard of Pogon Jedinstvo, on Friday, August 29 at 8:30 PM. Admission is free, and no reservations are required.

‘Vitić Dances’ is a film about the fight to renovate a building on Laginjina Street in Zagreb, designed by Ivo Vitić, one of the key architects of Croatian and Yugoslav socialist modernism and the international style. This anthology modernist building becomes a metaphor for society in this “story about us, the others, and the space in between.”

The film was shot over nearly 20 years and edited over 5 years. In a highly dynamic way, it explores the relationship between architecture and society through the example of the renovation of the residential-commercial complex designed by architect Ivo Vitić in Zagreb. As a result of the community art project of the same name by Boris Bakal and Shadow Casters (Bacači sjenki), the building was renovated between 2016 and 2018 and represents the largest investment in the residential renovation of a cultural monument in the Republic of Croatia since World War II.

The film premiered at the 19th ZagrebDox in April 2023 and has since won numerous awards: a Special Mention at Days of Croatian Film 2023, a Special Recognition for the Preservation of Memory and Cultural Heritage at the 18th Balkan New Film Festival in Stockholm (Sweden), the Grand Prize for Best Documentary at the Asian Talent International Film Festival 2024 in Ahmednagar (India), Best Documentary at the festival in Ecuador (San Antonio), Best Film, Best Production, and Best Director awards at a festival in London, as well as the Grand Prix at the festival in Romania (Rasnov).
