The Shadow Casters invite you to a wild and creative film adventure that continues in Velika Gorica at the Center for Children, Youth and Family!
Join a cinematic exploration with the fantastic Frooom! workshops, where you’ll discover how a film is made – from the first frames to the advanced challenges of editing, screenwriting, and filming.
FROOOM! Film School for Children and Youth was created with the goal of teaching participants to watch, study, understand, and create the language of film, as well as to encourage them to actively explore and create video works.
FROOOM! is an innovative and interdisciplinary educational program designed for children and young people aged 7 to 18. Through film workshops, participants explore the history of film, analyze media content, and develop creative skills. The workshops are held in small groups and include different levels: beginner, advanced, and masterclass.
The first Frooom! Film School was held in 2012 in Zagreb and was created by the non-profit organization Shadow Casters under the leadership of Boris Bakal. Since then, the program has expanded to Split, Rijeka, Pakrac, Gradec, Osijek, Sinj, Komiža, Pula, Opatija, Koprivnica, Dubrovnik, and Prelog.

Beginner Workshop Description
In the beginner workshop, participants watch new and classic films and learn to analyze and view films critically—learning through play! They discover camera shots, framing, film genres and types, learn how to write a screenplay, and are introduced to stop-motion animation as a way to understand the importance of editing and storytelling—dramaturgy.
They play and experiment with everything that made film possible: from Chinese zoetropes, mannerist optical experiments, French praxinoscopes, camera obscura, and analog film strips, to drones, videophones, television, smartphones, and video games. They learn about film as a unique way of recording reality and communicating, and as an art form. All of this—through play and collaboration!
Advanced Workshop Description
In the advanced workshop, participants review what they’ve learned in the beginner level and connect their previous experience with film and media content they’ve encountered since their last workshop. Together with instructors and peers, they develop stories to turn into documentary, narrative, or experimental films.
Throughout the process (if they wish), they use smartphones or iPads to shoot stop-motion films documenting everything happening around them – a “making of Frooom!” video. Participants share and discuss their stories and screenplays, and after preparing for production, developing the script into a shooting script, choosing locations (location scouting) and actors (casting), they shoot their films and prepare them for editing.
The workshops take place at the Center for Children, Youth and Family in Velika Gorica,
Trg Kralja Tomislava 16 (entrance from the courtyard side of the building).
A hot meal of choice is provided for all participants each day.
All children are insured against injuries.
