At the end of this month, on January 30, a screening of the film “Vitić Dances“ by Boris Bakal and Martin Semenčić will be held at the Dubrovnik Society of Architects, followed by a conversation with Boris Bakal.
“Vitić Dances“ premiered in April in Zagreb, where it impressed the audience so much that the screening was repeated a week later. People were fascinated by the film about the struggle to restore an architectural masterpiece by rebuilding the community of co-owners, uncovering, layer by layer, all the social relations, misunderstandings, conflicts, antagonisms, prejudices, and hopes. The story of the building became a story about a global human misunderstanding. The film follows, almost 15 years, the eponymous community art project by Boris Bakal and the Shadows Throwers, in which various conceptual artistic means are used to bring the community of co-owners to a collective restoration of the modernist architectural masterpiece by architect Ivo Vitić.
Since its premiere, the film has been featured at numerous festivals and has won several awards: Special Recognition at the Days of Croatian Film 2023, Special Recognition for the Preservation of Memory and Cultural Heritage at the 18th Balkan New Film Festival in Stockholm (Sweden), Grand Prix for Best Documentary at the Asian Talent International Film Festival 2024 in Ahmednagar (India), Best Documentary Award at a festival in Ecuador (San Antonio), and awards for Best Film, Best Production, and Best Director at a festival in London.
The Dubrovnik Society of Architects is a professional organization that works to develop and promote Dubrovnik and Croatian architecture, the culture of space, and the protection of the human environment. At Bacači, we are proud to start the year in such company and eagerly anticipate what is yet to come this year.
