Between Heritage and Film – Voices of Communities: Advanced Workshop for Primary School Students in Tkon
Written by Boris on 2026-01-23
The project “Between Heritage and Film – Voices of Communities” is implemented in partnership with the associations Shadow Casters (Zagreb), Teatar od Soli (Tkon), Pula Film Factory (Pula), and Arla (Đakovo), as well as numerous primary schools and cultural institutions across Croatia. The educational program Between Heritage and Film was designed with the aim of engaging teachers, students, film professionals, and the interested public in exploring and understanding cultural and historical heritage through the medium of film. The focus is on the preservation and reinterpretation of tangible and intangible heritage through audiovisual creativity, encouraging creative reflection and documentation of cultural phenomena, and recognizing the cultural resources of local communities.
This year, Shadow Casters began their activities precisely with this project and a journey to Neviđane, where workshops for teachers were held under the guidance of Boris Bakal, Bojana Burnać, and Boris Vuković. Two-thirds of this team continue their journey through southern Croatia and relocate for three days to Tkon, where they will hold a three-day advanced workshop at the Biograd na Moru Primary School for students who participated in previous workshops.
The film-and-heritage workshop “Transforming Heritage into Resourcefulness”, taking place from January 26 to 28, 2026, for students and teachers of the Biograd na Moru Primary School – Tkon Branch, explores and reflects on this transformation process through the language of film. It is a practical film laboratory in which, through the production of a short fiction film, all types of heritage are explored—including conflicted heritage, heritage that unsettles, and heritage rooted in fear, violence, and intolerance—precisely in order to ultimately open a dialogue about tolerance within a sense of togetherness in which heritage can rest peacefully.
The workshop is led by experienced film professionals: director, cinematographer, and educator Bojana Burnać; director, editor, screenwriter, and cinematographer Boris Vuković—both teachers at the Frooom! film school for children and youth in Zagreb—as well as drama pedagogue Ana Dalbello and Draga Cukina, program coordinator of the Teatar od Soli association from Tkon.
Shadow Casters are a multi-award-winning and critically acclaimed artistic and production platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, creation, and reflection on intermedial art. They successfully and seamlessly intertwine film production, international collaboration, theatrical performances, urban intermedial projects, activism, educational work, video art, and curatorial practice into a comprehensive artistic endeavor.
