Between Heritage and Film – Community Voices in Neviđane – Partner Kick-off Meeting and Introductory & Advanced Workshop for Teachers

Written by on 2026-01-09

Project “Between Heritage and Film”

The project “Between Heritage and Film” is implemented in partnership with the associations Shadow Casters (Zagreb), Teatar od Soli (Tkon), Pula Film Factory (Pula), and Arla (Đakovo), as well as numerous primary schools and cultural institutions throughout Croatia.

The educational program Between Heritage and Film is designed to engage teachers, students, film professionals, and the wider public in exploring and understanding cultural and historical heritage through the medium of film. The focus lies on preserving and reinterpreting tangible and intangible heritage through audiovisual creation, encouraging creative reflection and documentation of cultural phenomena, and recognizing the cultural resources of local communities.

This year, Shadow Casters begin with a journey to Neviđane and a kick-off meeting of all partners from Tkon, Preko, Biograd, Neviđane, and Zagreb. The program continues dynamically with introductory and advanced workshops for teachers led by Boris Bakal, Bojana Burnać, and Boris Vuković.

SHORT FILM – WORKSHOP ON USING SHORT FILMS IN EDUCATION

The Short Film workshop is intended for primary and secondary school teachers, as well as educators working with children and young people. The workshop will take place on January 12 and 13, 2026, at Vladimir Nazor Primary School on the island of Pašman (Neviđane) and at the Public Open University “Dom na žalu”.

The workshop will be led by actor, director, and intermedia artist Boris Bakal, cinematographer, author and director Bojana Burnać, and director and cinematographer Boris Vuković. The program includes:

  • Presentation of the international film-education platform CinEd, including available films and pedagogical materials

  • Screening and analysis of short films from the CinEd collection

  • Practical demonstrations of working with children and youth in the classroom

  • Hands-on work with a film of the participants’ own choice

The short film is a specific form of cinematic art that conveys a powerful message within a limited timeframe, posing a creative challenge for filmmakers while often resulting in highly innovative works. Given its duration (up to 30 minutes), the short film is ideal for educational purposes, especially within the 45-minute structure of school lessons.

As a medium with exceptional didactic potential, film is increasingly becoming a key educational tool, and its integration into teaching calls for its regular use. Through the Short Film workshop, participants will discover an exciting program of short films from the CinEd collection, covering a broad thematic and historical spectrum—from the pioneering works of the Lumière brothers, through mid-20th-century experimental films, to recent Croatian and European short fiction and documentary films.

In addition to facilitating the integration of film into teaching, the workshop offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the history and development of film as both an artistic and scientific medium.

Participation in the workshop is free of charge.
