The course of Croatian architects’ work in international frameworks has been divergent in spatial as well as in organisational terms. The definition of certain African and Asian territories as areas of its convergence is to a large extent a result of the foreign policy of socialist Yugoslavia, guided by the idea of non-alignment. Simultaneously, it is a dynamic platform of different actors in the construction market of young, emancipated nations, whose expected sovereign development acquired visions from diverse architectural standpoints.
The character of architectural practices that emerge within such a concept of the “Third World” is therefore distinctly heterogeneous. From the standpoint of the economy, the scale could be set from the state significant, to individual ventures, or even migrations. As for the immediate working conditions, there is a noticeable duality in regard to the location of project documentation development – while some projects were exported from the Croatian bureaus, the others were developed based on a long-term work in international environments of the particular sites.

An overview of African and Asian works by Croatian architects is presented through the ten case-studies, each showing a relevant thematic unit, diverse in space and content. The exhibition content is therefore a reflection of the variability, contained within the nature of particular modalities of the observed work.

The exhibition is part of the “Smarter City 2” project within our multi-year program of thinking about urbanity and architectural and architectural heritage as a community resource.
