We are pleased to invite you to the opening of the exhibition Design in the City 2, which will take place on October 15, 2020, at 6 PM at the old Trnje Market!
The exhibition will run from October 15 to 29 simultaneously at six different locations in public spaces across Zagreb, highlighting the relationship between design and everyday life.
Design in the City 2 is a combined edition and continuation of the exhibition Design in the City 1, held in November 2019. This exhibition further presents themes from the history of Croatian design, emphasizing the specific relationship between design and everyday life, particularly the role of design in shaping our environment. The largest part of the exhibition, under the common theme of households, will be showcased at the old Trnje Market, once the heart of the neighborhood and now surrounded by abandoned shops around a vacant concrete plaza. Theater posters will be displayed at locations including Ulica Republike Austrije 1, Tratinska 14, Vlaška 53, Primorska 17, and Zvonimirova 2. The distances between these locations aim to encourage citizens to walk and discover the most interesting stories about design, art, culture, and social heritage.
The first sequence of the exhibition is dedicated to hygiene. At the Trnje Market, packaging designs for laundry and dish detergents will be presented through the collaboration of designer Boris Ljubičić and Labud Factory, along with packaging designs for hair and cosmetic products by Marija Kalentić as a home designer at Neva, and visual solutions by Željko Borčić for Saponija’s Lahor products.
A review of the most notable solutions from the Končar Design Department from 1971 to 1990 will highlight the importance of design in the development of small household appliances. Additionally, collaboration with graphic designer Alira Hrabar Oremović will explore the engagement of designer Tomislav Hrabar in the Gorica Enamelware Factory.
The final sequence of the exhibition will be placed in the former advertising cabinets of the Croatian Film Archive, which have been used since 2006 by Shadow Casters for their artistic and research urban project Wall Newspapers. Exhibitions dedicated to theater poster design by Mihajlo Arsovski, Mirko Ilić, Vanja Cuculić, Ivan Picelj, and Barbara Blasin will be set up in the cabinets at Ulica Republike Austrije 1, Tratinska 14, Vlaška 53, Primorska 17, and Zvonimirova 2.
Design in the City 2 concludes the two-year project Center for Shaping Everyday Life. The themes of Croatian design covered in this segment will be compiled into the Network of Design Memory, an online archive that will be available to interested visitors by the end of October. This network is based on the need for systematic documentation of Croatian design heritage, where citizens can contribute new information, texts, photographs, testimonies, and comments related to specific industrial, graphic, fashion designs, as well as their authors, places, and events.
