SMARTER CITY 3.0: PHOENIX OR APOCALYPSE?
“Smarter City” is a biennial multi-year interdisciplinary program of the Shadow Casters organization, which deals with the city as a layered and thoughtful resource of the community.
It promotes the Croatian architectural and construction heritage with regional and world ones, connects tangible and intangible heritage, and constantly contextualizes the program with historical, scientific, cultural, and general social topics and contents that Shadow Casters process in cooperation with interested local communities.
The theme of the 2022 program is the new resourcefulness of the city under the name “Phoenix or Apocalypse”. The impetus has been the never-awaited systematic renovation of the City of Zagreb and Sisak-Moslavina County and the general issue of a new identity of the city/cities achieved through interpolations and renovations of old cores and zoning. The program explores different possibilities for the city’s resourcefulness and compares and contrasts opinions on what we can do to make the city, which by definition is a space of community and exchange, smarter, nicer to live in, and more useful for all citizens.
The exhibition “Skopje then and now” will present a series of photographs and films of the so-called urban Skopje laboratory of thinking and performance of the city during the great reconstruction of Skopje after the catastrophic earthquake in 1963. Experts from Chile, Argentina, Canada, Turkey, and Japan will present examples of systematic or non-systematic reconstruction after natural disasters.
