As part of the CinEd Croatia programme, the Bacači sjenki Association invites education professionals from Split and Dalmatia (and beyond), as well as film and drama professionals, to take part in a free two-day professional workshop exploring how film and heritage can become a powerful foundation for the film and media education of the future.
Venue: Multimedia Cultural Centre Split, Ulica slobode 28 (Beton Kino)
Workshop dates: March 10 and 11, 2026, from 4 to 6 pm
Applications: https://forms.gle/DTug9VVwJujUdH8F8
Number of participants is limited.
Workshop description
Through simple and practical examples, we will show how film heritage can be used as a powerful educational resource — without the need for specialised equipment or advanced technical knowledge. The workshop is intended for those willing to explore and introduce different, interdisciplinary, and stimulating methods into their educational practice.
Over the course of the programme, CinEd Croatia also presents an exciting short film programme reaching back to the very beginnings of cinema and its earliest stages of development. The programme explores the origins and evolution of two key strands of filmmaking that have shaped the cinema we know today. Following the traces of film history, we embark on a journey through a cinematic landscape that encompasses two fundamental approaches: recording reality and using visual film tricks to create magical worlds.
Participation is free of charge, and upon completion of the programme all participants will receive certified certificates of attendance stating the field of education and number of hours completed.
Workshop leaders
Bojana Burnać
Bojana Burnać is a multiple award-winning Croatian film director and cinematographer, recorded in the history of Croatian cinema as the first woman cinematographer of a feature-length fiction film. She holds a Master’s degree in cinematography from the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, and her professional work is dedicated to fiction, documentary, and experimental film, with a particular focus on underwater cinematography. Her directorial debut, the documentary My Life Without Air, had its world premiere at the prestigious Hot Docs festival in Toronto, and won the award for Best Debut Film at DokuFest. Burnać is also a passionate freediver, caver, and mountaineer, which strongly informs both her authorial approach and her thematic focus on the limits of the human body and mind. Since 2016, at Bacači sjenki she has been leading beginner, advanced, and master workshops for the Frooom! film school for children and young people, as well as for participants in the 54+ programme Only the Sky Is Our Limit, and film-and-heritage workshops within the project Between Heritage and Film.
Boris Bakal
Boris Bakal is an award-winning theatre and film director and performer, intermedia artist and writer, polymath and public historian, as well as a heritage activist whose work is grounded in relational, site-specific, and participatory practices. As co-founder of the international artistic platform Bacači sjenki, he has conceived and realised projects on six continents, while also giving lectures and workshops in international contexts. In his interdisciplinary approach, he connects architecture and space, collective memory, performance practices, and film pedagogy, developing innovative heritage-oriented methodologies — from research and reinterpretation to education and social mobilisation.
His focus on heritage encompasses all of its registers and layers: dark history practices (working with difficult, traumatic, and suppressed histories), contested heritage and memory politics, as well as ephemeral, intangible, and resource-based heritage — the kind manifested in everyday life, relationships, knowledge, gestures, language, sound, and temporary spatial configurations of communities. Through this work, Bakal understands heritage as a living, negotiated, and participatory process in which the aesthetic, the social, and the political are constantly intertwined. Boris Bakal is the initiator of the successful interdisciplinary film education programmes Frooom!, Only the Sky Is Our Limit, Whisper of the Walls, Between Heritage and Film, and CinEd Croatia.
