Shadow Casters, a non-profit organization from Zagreb with a 22-year history of creative, production, and artistic work, invites teachers, professors, educators, and instructors in film and media literacy, as well as directors, dramaturges, actors, editors, cinematographers, visual and new media artists, and other film professionals and enthusiasts to a free professional development workshop on designing, planning, organizing, and conducting workshops and programs for media and film literacy.

Participants who complete this introductory professional development program will have the opportunity to participate in our educational programs for media and film literacy “CinEd,” “FROOOM!,” and “The Sky’s the Limit/Film Labyrinth.”

CinEd is a European educational program for teachers, educators, pedagogues, and interested professionals aimed at teaching children and young people about film and through film. It has been active since 2015, and Shadow Casters have been representatives of the CinEd network for Croatia for 5 years.

The aim of the CinEd program is to develop, through the professional development of teachers, educators, pedagogues, and instructors, long-term knowledge and appreciation of European cinema, critical judgment, creative sensibility, and to contribute to general education and awareness of European cultural diversity. To achieve this, CinEd mainly focuses on lecturers in formal and informal education systems, as well as those who can introduce young people to the world of European auteur and classical cinema, beyond the commercial productions and entertainment they are usually exposed to. The central element of the project is the online platform (https://www.cined.eu/collection), which provides free access to a carefully selected collection of top European heritage and contemporary art-house films with Croatian subtitles and secured rights for screening and subtitles through the platform for educational purposes. Each film is accompanied by free educational guides, as well as additional free education on the CinEd methodology of teaching about film and through film.

So far, within the CinEd project, which started in 2015 and until August 2024, it has been co-financed through the EU Creative Europe program, top European films have been brought closer to young people aged 6 to 19 in several countries: Portugal, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Croatia, Finland, Greece, Lithuania, and Turkey.

FROOOM! is a program for media, film, information, and information literacy of children and young people, which through three levels of education (basic, advanced, and master) enables participants to master all the technical, theoretical, and practical knowledge necessary for understanding, designing, and creating media, film, and information content. We believe that functional media literacy beyond everyday media, TV, and film experiences is essential for participation in modern society and for artistic creation in film, TV, and new media activities. FROOOM! has been implemented since 2011 in collaboration with non-profit associations and organizations, festivals, municipal and state institutions, and local governments in over ten cities and towns in Croatia: Zagreb, Rijeka, Split, Prelog, Sinj, Komiža, Pakrac, Pula, Gradec, Osijek, Ivanec, Krapina, Dubrovnik, and Koprivnica. “The Sky’s the Limit” is a program for media, film, information, and information literacy for adults over 55, through which participants learn theory and practice, creative processes, and explore numerous media, film, and information contents beyond standard and everyday experiences. They easily connect with young generations and learn about film, TV, and media creativity in its entirety and from various perspectives. We have been implementing the educational program “The Sky’s the Limit” since 2018 in collaboration with partners in Karlovac, Pula, Sinj, Pakrac, and Zagreb – and through the Film Labyrinth throughout Croatia. During the workshop (professional development), participants will learn the basic pedagogical methods of Bacači sjenki (interactivity, maieutics, playfulness, shifting perspectives, reality recycling, and others) and will have the opportunity to enhance the knowledge they already possess in pedagogical transmission of film and media creativity.
