From October 5 to 11, 2024, Frankfurt, Offenbach, and Wiesbaden will host the 47th edition of LUCAS, the oldest German film festival for young audiences. This festival offers a unique opportunity to explore award-winning film art intended for audiences aged 3 to 18, providing families and film enthusiasts with extraordinary cinematic experiences.

At the heart of the festival are competitions in the categories “Kids,” “Teens,” and “Youngsters.” In addition to the competitive program, LUCAS also offers classics from film history, short films for the youngest, and a variety of programs designed by children and young people. Throughout the festival week, special attention is given to film discussions, where creators from around the world engage with the audience, sharing their experiences and perspectives.

One of the most striking aspects of this year’s festival is the participation of the “Young European Film Critics” (YECs). We are proud to say that two young critics from Croatia attended the Frooom! film school for children and youth. They are Eva Romana Cvijetić (17) and Dominik Velčić (16). Along with two participants from Germany, they will present their own selection of films on the theme of “community.” Their commitment to exploring the film’s impact on community began last spring. Through intensive research and online workshops, the young critics developed a film series addressing the strong bonds of friendship and family, highlighting how these connections can overcome even the toughest obstacles.

Dominik emphasizes the importance of community, stating, “Films that focus on community highlight the connections between people and the strength that comes from mutual support.”

Their research led them to realize that solidarity and support play a key role in facing crises, creating space for dialogue on how community can serve as a source of hope and strength.

Eva adds, “Community is an important value that people of all ages need to learn about and discuss. Watching films can be a good way to convey this to children while also emphasizing its importance to adults.”

The selection of films to be presented at the festival is diverse and tailored to different age groups, ensuring that everyone can find something that inspires or provokes thought.

Eva and Dominik, along with their colleagues, have chosen three films for this year’s festival edition: La Haine, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Isle of Dogs.

The LUCAS festival is not only a celebration of film art but also a platform for young people to express themselves and share their thoughts about the world around them. This collaboration with young film critics further enriches the festival experience, opening doors to new perspectives and ideas.
