Today, July 5th at 9 PM, at the 24th Bihać Summer, a festival encompassing theater performances, book promotions, and diverse music concerts, Bacači sjenki will premiere in Bosnia and Herzegovina the co-production of the play “Pope Francis Wrestling with His Angel,” authored and directed by Zlatko Paković.

This critically acclaimed production, originally staged in the basement of the State Archive during last year’s Zadar festival “Nosi se,” is a collaboration between Theater VeRRdi, Arktik – Institute for the Future, and Shadow Casters. It explores the relationships between faith and religion, focusing on the Catholic Church and its clericalism.

While immersed in Christian symbolism and iconography, the play prompts contemplation of God from various perspectives and speaks to all true believers. Characters like Pope Francis, General Malatesta, and Sister Carmelite Magdalene Raguž are there to plunge us into questioning the meaning of the universe and existence within a historical context.

Through their interactions, the audience seeks their own faith and meaning during the performance, with the actors guiding us on “how the sky can still collapse on our heads” (A. Artaud, “Theater and Its Double”).

The performance stars actor, director, and playwright Vilim Matula, intermedial artist, director, and actor Boris Bakal, and actress and author Mia Zara.

The play will be performed tonight in the main hall of the Bihać Cultural Center, marking the beginning of a new season with performances scheduled in Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split, and Podgorica.
