The CinEd project – Watching Together extended for another two years

The CinEd project aims to bring European cinema closer to young people and is conducted across 12 European countries.

CinEd is a European film education program designed for children and youth through systematic training of teachers and film educators who work with them. It provides free access to a curated collection of high-quality European heritage and contemporary art-house films with Croatian subtitles for educational purposes. Its main objective is to develop a lasting knowledge and appreciation for European cinematography, critical judgment, and creative sensibility among young people, while contributing to general education through film and awareness of European cultural diversity. To achieve this, CinEd focuses on teachers and film educators in formal and non-formal education systems, as those who can open up the world of authorial and classical cinema to young people beyond the commercial entertainment they usually encounter.

CinEd offers film educators and teachers free access to an archetypal film collection with secured screening rights and subtitles through the cined.eu platform, free accompanying pedagogical guides for each film, and free CinEd methodology workshops on film teaching. We are pleased to announce that for the first time in the new cycle, a Croatian film will be included in the cined.eu film collection.

The Croatian partner in the project is the association Shadow Casters, which joined in 2020 and will continue to offer free education to all interested parties over the next two years. Since becoming part of the CinEd partnership, Shadow Casters has been working with teachers to modernize teaching through exciting film content, as well as with educators involved in non-formal educational programs like the FROOOM! film school for children and youth. Project activities will continue with workshops in Zagreb (July 11-12) and Rijeka (July 14-15), for which applications will soon open.

This marks the sixth edition of CinEd since its inception and the second under the leadership of the Portuguese Cinematheque – Museum of Cinema, securing funding under the Creative Europe – MEDIA sub-program for audience development and film education. This means that CinEd 2.1 – Watching Together – one of eight selected programs out of 38 applications, and the highest-rated, will continue its activities during 2022-2024.

Since 2015, the project has been bringing European cinema to young people aged six to nineteen, involving twelve countries: Portugal, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Croatia, Finland, Greece, Lithuania, and Turkey.

During CinEd 2.0 – which concludes in September 2022 – the consortium organized numerous film screenings for students and training sessions for teachers, held either live or online depending on pandemic-related restrictions and guidelines in force due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
