The Mysterious Black Comedy in Vrbovsko

Written by on 2021-10-18

New CinEd Screening at KINU.hr Vrbovsko, October 20, 2021, at 10 AM

Considered by some to be one of the ten most prominent film directors in the world, the author of this film was born in a Southern European country and has won over 30 awards for his films at festivals such as Berlin, Venice, Cannes, Montreal, Karlovy Vary, and Valencia.

The film we will screen in Vrbovsko was made in 1963 and is considered one of his most important works. As a recipient of numerous awards, this film examines his own country (the director’s country), its daily life, and the decisions its citizens make every day, satirically addressing themes of responsibility, consistency, authenticity, and survival, all from the perspective of a young person.

Because of this, the film remains relevant and important for young people today, as difficult times always confront us with choices: professions, life partners, job offers, investments, spending, social activities, education, and everyday behavior. Although the destinies of its characters differ significantly from ours today, this difference casts a bright light on the protagonists’ decisions and highlights their consequences.

This black comedy will make us laugh and cry with its brilliant actors, perfect mise-en-scène (direction of scenes and character movements within the frame), and cinematography.

To start the day, we will watch the first British (preserved) feature film “Rover the Rescuer” from 1905, a film with the first paid actors and the first canine film star in film history. We will practice film and media literacy and learn the film terms necessary for watching the mysterious film that is the highlight of our film day.
