Workshop “Wikipedia and Wikimedia – Open and Free Content” this Friday and Saturday

Written by on 2021-04-19

You are writing an assignment, you go to Wikipedia, read something smart there, use that information, and get an “F” once and an “A” the next time. Sounds familiar? But what happened here? Isn’t Wikipedia—the most famous online encyclopedia—accurate, truthful, and verified? And what if it’s not? Can we correct it, add to it, change it ourselves? How do we discern the “true” truth from such different Wikipedia articles? How can you get accurate information from which you can create your own view of an event, fact, or term?

Wikipedia was started 20 years ago and has articles in about 300 languages, over 200,000 articles in Croatian, photos, media recordings, and a large number of contributors who have edited it, and that can be you too!

For the 4th Media Literacy Days, which are being held this year from April 19 to 25, Frooom! film school and the Shadow Casters Association are organizing a two-day workshop for children and youth: “Wikipedia and Wikimedias – open and free content.”

We invite our current, former, and future young students of Frooom! film school for children and youth aged between 9 and 16 to join us at the workshop this Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24, 2021, from 10 am to 12 pm online via the Zoom application.

Participants will be guided through exploring the writing and understanding of Wikipedia by Željko Blaće, a wikimedian and new media artist with experience and broad interests. Together, you will explore ways to use Wikipedia and Wikimedias and discover how to further supplement and create various textual, photographic, video, and other media content for it. The workshop is free, but the number of participants is limited to eight (8). No prior knowledge is necessary, but each participant needs to open their own wiki account HERE (you do not need to use your full name).

The expected duration of each day of the workshop is two hours with short breaks.

The goal of Media Literacy Days is to raise public awareness about the importance of media literacy and to provide as many citizens, especially children and youth, with the opportunity to learn about media and information literacy.
