The 16th Successful Season of Shadow Casters Comes to a Close

The 16th season of Shadow Casters concluded with great success, culminating in the national premiere of the play “MALE/FEMALE – A Social Game for Women and Men” at the Pergine Open Festival near Trento, featuring Italian and Croatian performers and directed by Boris Bakal.

Simultaneously with preparations for this performance in Italy, Shadow Casters hosted their traditional and renowned film school for children and youth, which has been held for the past 6 years across 8 cities in Croatia.

This summer’s Frooom! was record-breaking in every aspect: 159 children participated in 4 weeks of classes in beginner, advanced, and master workshops; 15 instructors (Anja Pletikosa, Vedran Senjanović, Dražen Žerjav, Martin Šatović, Jakov Čuveljak, Lea Mileta, Dea Jagić, Pavle Perković, Nada Kovačević, Lidija Kraljić, Bojana Burnać, Dalija Dozet, Veno Mušinović, Stipe Bagarić, Boris Bakal); 80 film programs; and over 10 short films (including fiction, documentary, experimental, and animated) created by the participants.

The play “MALE/FEMALE” began its journey in 2011 in Zagreb, directed by Boris Bakal and Katarina Pejović, and has since been performed in theaters and festivals across Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia. Although discussed, praised, and theoretically analyzed (UK, Poland, Germany) outside this geographic context, the play’s jazz-theatrical improvisation and interactive format had never been presented beyond this linguistic area. Therefore, Shadow Casters decided to re-stage and produce it with the support of domestic and international partners, donors, and co-producers, initially in Italy, but soon in other linguistic and geographic contexts. Trento Spettacoli, one of the co-producers, has announced a long Italian tour and numerous guest performances, with plans to also showcase the play in Rovinj, Pula, and Rijeka.

This 16th season of Shadow Casters began with numerous performances of the hit “Battle of Neretva” in Podgorica, Kotor, Skopje, Bitola, Dubrovnik, Zadar, and Split, and recently enjoyed an exceptionally successful appearance in Yerevan, Armenia. It continued with symposia and workshops of the urban platforms “Urban Hum” and “If Buildings/Spaces Could Speak” in Kotor, Mitrovica, Skopje, Belgrade, and Zagreb; expert lectures and workshops at universities in Helsinki, New York, Zagreb, and Yerevan; and was confirmed with the ongoing filming of the documentary “Concrete Love” about the renovation of Vitić’s skyscraper, which has recently entered post-production, managed alongside Shadow Casters by the renowned production company Restart.

The new 17th season of public and cultural activities of Shadow Casters will kick off in August with the nearly sold-out innovative educational program Frooom! in Sinj, Prelog, and Zagreb. It will continue with the performance of “Battle of Neretva” on September 23 at the Mladinsko Theatre in Ljubljana and, also in September, the continuation of the project “If Buildings/Spaces Could Speak” in Skopje and Zagreb. In September, Shadow Casters will present their innovative educational film program Frooom! at the European Conference on Media and Film Literacy in Sarajevo, invited by the UN and EU. Following this, there will be numerous guest appearances, new premieres, new and old educational programs for children and professionals, as well as for those aged 54 and over.
